Shortlist announced for 2016 Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (PICS) Annual Awards
A supported living development for adults with learning disabilities has been shortlisted in the regional finals of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) Annual Awards.
Daffodil House, designed by Niven Architects, is among the finalists in the Community Benefit category of the North East branch heats.
The eight-apartment building provides independent and supported living for adults with learning disabilities is located within an existing care community in Hemlington, Middlesbrough, administered by The Camphill Village Trust.
The innovative building - which used a collaborative BIM model during the design process – has already been hailed a model of design for people with complex needs.
Niven’s ‘inclusive’ approach to design - together with the BIM approach - enabled the residents to visualise the space more easily and achieve the homes they desired.
Karen Crowe, marketing manager at Niven Architects, said: “The building has been a huge success, enabling residents to enjoy both independent and supported living within in an existing care community.
“It has also been cited as an exemplar project by the local authority for use in the transition of young adults.”
She added: “The use of the BIM model on this project was seen by the client as being of particular benefit in helping the residents, who have a wide range of learning disabilities, to visualise more easily what their homes would look like.”
The final announcement of the winners in all the regional heats is due on 15 April.
