Stepping Hill Hospital gains new electronic patient record system


InterSystems TrakCare to consolidate patient information to improve care

One of the most-advanced electronic patient record systems available is going to be introduced at Stepping Hill Hospital to further improve safety, efficiency, and patient care.

InterSystems TrakCare is a state-of-the-art health information system that will include up-to-the-minute information about a patient's care. All the relevant information is easily accessible to authorised care providers. This information includes planned treatments, medications, tests and scans, and allergies. Patient preferences are also recorded to help staff better understand specific needs, such as if patients have hearing difficulties or require letters in large fonts.

This is the first time there will be one joined-up system for the whole of Stepping Hill Hospital, which treats half a million patients every year.

Patients will only have to give their address once for all their relevant medical information to be available. Doctors and nurses will then be able to securely and confidentially share patient information with each other, as well as with other hospitals and GPs. This will lead to a better understanding of the patient’s conditions and treatments wherever they receive care. It will also help the trust to plan and manage its service more effectively.

Dr James Catania, medical director at Stockport NHS Foundation Trust, which runs Stepping Hill Hospital, said: “Patient safety and improving efficiency are two of our top priorities, and the new system will be a huge help for both. This is a more-efficient way of accessing records, with less room for error, and a better way of sharing data between staff to ensure the best-possible joined-up care and treatment for our patients.”

The system will be fully in place across the whole hospital by 2018.
